What is PrEP?

PrEP (which stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a drug for individuals who are HIV negative but take it to protect themselves from contracting HIV, if they feel they are at risk.

It is super important that if you are on PrEP that you take your medication consistently and correctly as that is the only way to ensure the effectiveness of the drug. But guys, remember PrEP ONLY protect you against HIV, you still have to use condoms to reduce your risk of contracting STIs.

PrEP is different from PEP. PEP, or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, is taken if you’ve already been exposed to HIV, hence it is called POST; while PrEP is taken to prevent, which is why it is called PRE-exposure Prophylaxis.
